BMI Calculation ! The Day before Surgery
|

Body Mass Index (BMI) is
acknowledged to be the international standard to evaluate the level of
obesity. BMI is calculated by taking the weight (in kilograms), and
dividing it by height (in meters) squared.

What are the weak points of BMI?
It is not entirely accurate to use BMI calculation to determine if a person is,
for example, overweight. For instance, muscular people have high BMI values, but
they are not fat. Also, BMI does not apply to children.
Another point to consider is that the influence of race and ethnic groups in the
BMI calculation has not been sufficiently studied yet. For example, according to
a group that advises the World Health Organization (WHO), Asian descent should
be considered overweight at a BMI of only 23.
