Origin of Obesity!
Back in time, prehistoric man did not have enough food and spent too much energy
getting it. He usually exercised a great deal by running from predators or after
his prey. Those were scarcity times. The natural instinct was, then, to eat as
much as possible to keep a temporary body energetic storage, as he would never
know when the next meal would be.
Throughout time, man evolved and mastered his domain. He learnt how to grow
plants, raise cattle, and above all, he neither had to hunt or be hunted
anymore. At that moment, maybe last century, man met abundance and lack of
predators. It is certain that no other species conquered these privileges.
Apparently, it is the progress of our specie, but actually, it is the dawn of
new era: "sedentarism and uncontrolled eating era". We submitted ourselves to a
lifestyle that our body was not made for.
Fire was discovered and man learnt how to cook food, and that is when we started
removing fiber contents out of the diet, which we call external digestion. We
also learnt the process of food refinement, which makes sugar and wheat
fiberless. Thus food has no fibers.
Due to great urbanization, houses got smaller, with smaller kitchens, not
capable of fresh food (fruits and vegetables) storage to provide the right
amount of energetic fuel for the body. Therefore, it was necessary to figure out
a practical alternative to nourish people. So we came up with compact sized,
hypercaloric and not perishable food. The components of this kind of food are
fiberless starch and sugar, like bread, cookies, chocolate and all the food we
find in the supermarket shelves. That kind of food does not stretches the
stomach, consequently, it does not cause fullness sensation, so we have to eat
more and more.
The modern food is much easier to digest and almost all digestion is made in the
duodenum.
Therefore, food is absorbed into the blood, in the duodenum and the initial part
of jejunum. No residues get in the terminal ileum, consequently there are no
stimuli for GLP1, PYY and Oxintomodulina hormones production. Those hormones
warn the brain that it is time to stop eating. In other words, no hormones, no
warnings and consequently no stop eating.
Human intellectual progress brought us many advantages, however, one of the
greatest disadvantages is obesity. We are provided with great calorie opulence,
but not enough calorie consumption.
Six Causes of Modern Obesity
• Sedentarism - we are at the top of food chain, we do not have predators;
• Sedentarism - we have abundance of food. All the other species live with food
scarcity and they run great deal after food;
• Sedentarism - we live locked in our houses, due to urban violence;
• Sedentarism - technology allows us to execute our everyday tasks from home,
through Internet, delivery services and so on;
• We eat hypercaloric, compact sized food that do not stretch the stomach, they
do not cause satiety, so we keep eating;
• We eat hypercaloric food which is absorbed in the duodenum and jejunum, but
the intestine starves, so it does not warn the brain to stop eating, thus we are
still hungry even after a meal.
In short, the modern world induces obesity; man of the future will be a severely
obese sufferer. The same technology that promotes well being and increases life
span, thanks to organ transplants and vaccines, will also be the cause of many
deaths due to extreme obesity.
It is of vital importance that we learn about this phenomenon and change
immediately our alimentary and physical habits.
