BMI Calculators - International BMI Table - Body Mass Index for children
Obesity is most commonly calculated using Body Mass Index (BMI). BMI is calculated by dividing a person's weight in kilograms by his or her height in square meters. Overweight (pre-obese) starts with a BMI of 25. An adult with a BMI of 30 or greater is clinically obese.
Use our BMI Calculators. The USA/Imperial calculator uses pounds and inches and our Metric BMI calculator can be used with kilograms (kg) and centimeters (m) or use our International BMI table! To interpret BMI for children go to BMI-Children

HEIGHT IN FEET/INCHES AND
METERS |
|
Example how to
calculate the Body Mass Index (BMI) manually:
|
BMI
=
Weight (kg)
(Height
(m) X Height (m) |
80kg / 1.80m x
1.80m =
24.7 which is Normal
(see BMI table above).
To calculate BMI
using pounds and inches, use:
|
BMI
=
Weight (lbs) x 703
(Height
(inches) X Height (inches) |
178lbs x 703 /
74in x
74in =
22.9 which is Normal
(see BMI table above).
Interpretation of BMI
As a measure,
BMI became popular during the early 1980s as obesity started to become an issue.
BMI provided a simple numeric measure of a person's "thickness"
allowing health professionals to discuss the problems of over- and under-weight
more objectively with their patients. However, BMI has become controversial.
Many people, including physicians, have come to rely on its apparent numerical
"authority" for medical diagnosis. However the BMI is just meant to be used as a
simple means of classifying individuals with an average body composition. A
frequent use of the BMI is to assess how much an individual's body weight
departs from what is normal or desirable for a person of his or her height. The
weight excess or deficiency may, in part, be accounted for by body fat although
other factors such as muscularity also affect BMI.
BMI levels for overweight and obesity are now set by the
World Health Organization. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines
"overweight" as a BMI equal to or more than 25, and "obesity" as a BMI equal to
or more than 30. These cut-off points provide a benchmark for individual
assessment, but there is evidence that risk of chronic disease in populations
increases progressively from a BMI of 21. WHO’s latest projections indicate that
globally in 2005 approximately 1.6 billion adults (age 15+) were overweight and
at least 400 million adults were obese. WHO further projects that by 2015,
approximately 2.3 billion adults will be overweight and more than 700 million
will be obese.
Once considered a problem only in high-income countries, overweight and obesity
are now dramatically on the rise in low- and middle-income countries,
particularly in urban settings.
Interpretation of BMI for children
For adults 20 years old and older, BMI is interpreted using standard weight
status categories that are the same for all ages and for both men and women. BMI
is used differently for children. It is calculated the same way as for adults,
but then compared to typical values for other children of the same age. For
children and teens, the interpretation of BMI is both age- and
sex-specific. For more information about interpretation for children and teens,
visit Child and Teen
BMI Calculator. According to the World Health Organization at
least 20 million children under the age of 5 years are overweight globally in
2005. You can find children BMI interpretation tables on our website:

Obesity Stats
Although the mainstay in any weight loss program today is still the traditional route of diet and exercise, studies show that as many as 80%-95% of obese dieters regain any weight lost within two to five years of dieting
(often even sooner).
|
Obesity Stats
For many people dieting has become a routine which they follow as frequently as changing their socks, coming on and off of diets several times each year. This inevitable results in their weight constantly falling and rising and, more often than not, leaves them with more weight than when they started!

Did you know that you may be able to claim tax relief for weight loss surgery?
The Inland Revenue Service (IRS) may give tax relief in certain circumstances to people who are required to pay out-of-pocket expenses for weight loss programs.
