Hospital São Luiz - ITAIM
São Luiz General and Obstetric Hospital was founded in 1938 by physicians Alceu
de Campos Rodrigues, Renato Fairbanks Barbosa, and Paulo Gomes Carneiro. It was
then a 12-bed polyclinic in the Itaim Bibi District. In 1940, the unit became
the first emergency center in that region. Twenty years later, already
established as a hospital, São Luiz provided the community with 80 beds. São
Luiz Obstetric Hospital was opened in 1983 and nine years later, the Diagnostic
Center was incorporated.
São Luiz is considered to be one of the most advanced hospitals in Brazil. It is
a national benchmark for general hospital, emergency, diagnosis and obstetric
services. Known for its advanced technology and quality of services, the
branches of São Luiz together perform 2.8 thousand hospitalizations, 2.1
thousand surgeries, 25 thousand emergency services, 49 thousand examinations a
month, through their diagnostic centers, in addition to nine thousand births per
year. The hospital community consists of 2.5 thousand employees and
approximately 11 thousand enrolled physicians. The chain has 524 beds and it is
going to have an additional 279 beds in its new Anália Franco branch, in the
Tatuapé District.São Luiz is proud to have a general hospital infection rate
of 2.5%, very low by both domestic and international standards. The U.S. CDC
(Center for Disease Control), one of the world’s strictest bodies, works at a 5%
rate, similar to the domestic norm. This was achieved due to the efficient
epidemiological surveillance developed by the members of the Hospital Infection
Control Service (SCIH).
In the surgical field, São Luiz has been working to create the best
surroundings, with state-of-the-art equipment and the best asepsis conditions.
It is a benchmark in neurological, cardiovascular, thoracic and transplant
surgeries. The Surgery Center at the Itaim Branch has 18 rooms, and the Morumbi
Branch has 13. They are all equipped for highly complex procedures such as
kidney and liver transplants, and heart and neurological surgeries. The Itaim
Branch performs 3 thousands surgeries every month, and the Morumbi Branch, 2.6
thousand. São Luiz today has one of Brazil’s best hospital hotel services. Its
facilities place the well-being of their patients first.
Established in 1998, the São Luiz Hospital Studies Center is an outcome of
such concern towards updating, developing hospital routines, with the aim of
providing excellent medical care. This department gathers physical and human
resources organized to accomplish their missions: to offer intellectual,
technical and professional improvement for physicians and the multidisciplinary
teams; spread medical knowledge to the clinical staff and other employees; and
promote advanced training in the field of health.
