Vitamin B12 Supplements after Gastric Bypass
Vitamin B-12 is essential for the production and regeneration of red blood
cells. It is also needed for proper function of the central nervous system. It
improves concentration, memory, balance, and relieves irritability. Vitamin B12
is necessary for the proper utilization of fats, carbohydrates, and proteins for
body building and muscle regeneration. Vitamin B-12 is also involved in many
vital metabolic and enzymatic processes, including the metabolism of folic acid.
A shortage of vitamin B-12 may go unnoticed for a long time slowly causing irreversible damage to the body. Also, those taking B-12 with folic acid, may have a false B-12 level reading. The risks involved in vitamin B-12 deficiency are so serious, and preventive measures so simple, that it seems unwise to disregard them. The easiest and most reliable way to prevent deficiencies is to take a supplement. Vitamin B-12 has no known toxic effects.
B-12 absorption relies heavily upon an in-tact digestive tract. Vitamin B-12 is
a large molecule that will not cross any part of your body unless it is
specifically brought across by a transport system. For B12 this requires a system that involves a special protein made in the stomach, called
Intrinsic Factor (IF), and the transport system in the terminal ileum which brings B12 into the body when it is bound with intrinsic factor.
The creation of the gastric pouch separates the part of the
stomach that creates Intrinsic Factor. Hence, Vitamin B-12 is not extracted from
proteins and remains unavailable for absorption.
B-12 deficiencies used to be treated mainly by intramuscular injections. However, this practice has several draw backs. Injections can be painful, sometimes are difficult to provide for elderly patients and can be costly, when given by a professional. Large oral doses are very poorly absorbed.
However sublingual and intranasal B12 formulations appear to give injections a run for their money. Common intake is now through tablets under the tongue (Sublinqual),
while recently nasal B12 is also getting more commonly available.
Sublinqual (under tongue) Vitamin B-12
Sublingual Vitamin B12 are separate available in tablets - Dissolve 1 tablet daily under
the tongue, or as prescribed by your surgeon or nutritionist.
Gastric Bypass Patients should consider starting B12 supplements two to
three months following surgery.
Nasal Spray or Nasal Gel Vitamin B-12
Nasal Spray B12 or Nasal Gel B12 is absorbed through the nasal tissues and distributed by the blood to the
rest of the body. Most people using Nasal Spray experience no side effects.
Reactions that may occur infrequently include headaches, nausea, rhinitis and
nose irritations.

Vitamins after gastric Bypass
After surgery, your body has difficulty absorbing certain nutrients because most of your stomach and the first part of your small intestine are bypassed. To prevent a vitamin or mineral deficiency, take vitamin and mineral supplements regularly. Your
dietitian will prescribe a multivitamin, multi mineral, protein, calcium, vitamin B-12 and possibly an iron supplement.
